Cause of death: Myocarditis
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). It resembles a heart attack but coronary arteries are not blocked. It is most often due to infection by common viruses. The consequences of myocarditis vary widely. It can cause a mild disease without any symptoms that resolves itself, or it may cause chest pain, heart failure, or sudden death. Based on her death certificate, it would appear that Katherine died suddenly, at a home she shared with her daughter, Josephine Bittlingmeier (1880-1966), in Union, New Jersey.
