CAUSES OF DEATH

Line

Mildred Greuter
born October 10, 1915 in Newark, New Jersey
died April 6, 1916, in Newark, New Jersey - age 6 months.

Father: Herman Greuter (1874-1940)
Mother: Christina Kristmacher (1875-1962)

Cause of death: Measles

Measles is an infection of the respiratory system caused by a virus. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a flat, red rash on the skin that is covered with small bumps. The rash eventually covers the entire body, often causing itching. The disease is spread through contact with fluids from an infected person's nose and mouth, either directly or through coughing and sneezing, and is highly contagious. 90% of people without immunity sharing living space with an infected person will catch it.

In 1916, a measles epidemic swept through all parts of Newark. 1,355 cases were reported in the first six weeks of the year, with 31 deaths from the disease. On April 6, baby Mildred, Herman and Christina's eighth and final child, became another sad statistic. An effective vaccination against the disease wasn't developed until the 1960's.
