CAUSES OF DEATH

Cause of death: Cerebral Embolism
Lawrence was working as a blacksmith and living at 644 S. 11th Street in Newark with his wife Mary and 5 of his adult children, including my grandmother, Frances, when he died. He was being treated for Chronic Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscles). When a patient suffers from Chronic Myocarditis, the heart's two small upper chambers (the atria) quiver like a bowl of jello instead of beating strongly and effectively. Some blood isn't pumped completely out of them when the heart beats, so it pools and clots can form.
In Lawrence's case, a clot formed in his heart and was carried by the bloodstream until it lodged in an artery leading to his brain, blocking the flow of blood. The result was a stroke that he never recovered from.
He was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Newark.
