CAUSES OF DEATH

Line

John H. Bechtold
born August 26, 1866 in Newark, NJ
died July 25, 1938 in Livingston, NJ

Father: Jacob H. Bechtold
Mother: Louisa Bittingmeier
Wife: Catharine Mulhearn / Anna House / Antoinette Baechlin

Cause of death: Pulmonary Edema

In May of 1934, John, a retired Newark policeman, was diagnosed with Myocarditis and Arteriosclerosis. Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscles. Arteriosclerosis occurs when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from your heart to the rest of your body (arteries) become thick and stiff — sometimes restricting blood flow to your organs and tissues. Healthy arteries are flexible and elastic, but over time, the walls in your arteries can harden, a condition commonly called hardening of the arteries.

John survived with these conditions for four years. Then, in May of 1938, he was diagnosed with Pulmonary Edema. Pulmonary Edema is a condition caused by excess fluid in the lungs. This fluid collects in the numerous air sacs in the lungs, making it difficult to breathe. In most cases, heart problems cause pulmonary edema.

John's condition worsened, and he succumbed to his ailments two months later in July. He was buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in East Orange.

At the time of his death, John was living at 9 Woodland Terrace in Livingston, NJ, with his third wife, Antoinette Baechlin.
