Jacob Bechtold was Louisa Bittlingmeier's second husband. Her first husband. William Schneider, was killed in action in 1864, during the American Civil War. Jacob was also a Civil War soldier. He served in Company C of the 8th New Jersey Volunteers, having enlisted for three years as a substitute (i.e. he was paid to take the place of a draftee) on August 5, 1864. Jacob was at Appomattox on April 9, 1865 to witness Lee's surrender. He was mustered out of service on July 17, 1865 in Washington, D.C., a week before marrying the widow Louisa on July 26, 1865, two months after the war had ended.
